Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan will attend the 16th edition of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) as the chief guest, the organisers announced on Thursday. The festival is scheduled to be held from August 14 to August 25.

The announcement was made via IFFM’s official Instagram page, where the organisers hailed Aamir Khan as a “global icon” who has consistently redefined Indian cinema with his impactful storytelling, box office successes, and genre-defying films.

“From redefining storytelling in Indian cinema to pushing creative boundaries, Aamir Khan stands tall as a legend who has shaped generations of cinegoers,” the festival noted.

Comedian and actor Vir Das will also be attending the event as a special guest.

IFFM particularly praised Aamir Khan’s 2007 film Taare Zameen Par—which he directed, produced, and starred in—for initiating national and international dialogue on inclusive education. The film became a cultural phenomenon, especially in China and the Middle East, and was India’s official entry to the 80th Academy Awards.

On the professional front, Khan was recently seen in Sitaare Zameen Par, a spiritual sequel to Taare Zameen Par. Directed by R.S. Prasanna, the film addresses the struggles of individuals with intellectual disabilities through a heartfelt narrative set around a basketball competition. The movie received critical acclaim and grossed over ₹100 crore worldwide.

Special screenings of Sitaare Zameen Par were held in Delhi and Mumbai, attended by public figures such as Shashi Tharoor and Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis.

Aamir Khan will next appear in Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Tamil-language action thriller Coolie, alongside Rajinikanth. A recently unveiled black-and-white poster featuring Khan in a rugged, intense look has generated buzz among fans. The film, also starring Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, and Sathyaraj, is slated for release on August 14, 2025.
